ZAINABAD HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Zainabad is named after Nawab Zainkhan who ruled the region a century ago. People of Zainabad are farmers & salt manufacturers. The ruling family of Zainabad operates a resort called Desert Coursers which is the main donor for the project.

Zainabad Human and Environment Development Project (ZHEDP) was founded in 1998 for the development of the villages surrounding Zainabad. One of the first projects was to build a school in a village called Mulada, which now educates 84 children from the age group of 5 to 10 years. There was no school building in this village before ZHEDP built one. We have also supplied footware and books to the students of the school.

In 1999 ZHEDP did some reconstruction on wells in nearby villages which even today are the main source of water for about 2000 persons. In the same year we helped in starting a boarding school for about 40 children whose parents are salt manufacturers and hence deprived of education. The school gives them basic education, lodging & boarding. Now it is run successfully by the village.

On the 26th January 2001 we had an earth quake, it was the biggest disaster that any one had experienced. Most of the village schools collapsed. ZHEDP built a girls school in Zainabad which now educates about 350 girls from 5 to 12 years, out of which about 175 are fully supported by ZHEDP, clients and friends of Desert Coursers. Recently with the help of some clients we have put a drinking water facility in this school, it is the only school having this provision. As most of the houses had collapsed, people needed food & clothing, ZHEDP helped more than 2000 families by providing this. During this time ZHEDP helped the Red Cross and other organisations to distribute the relief material. The vehicles of Desert Coursers were used for transporting the sick and injured to nearby hospitals.

In February 2002 another big disaster struck Gujarat; the riots. During this time Desert Coursers came as big help, the cottages accommodated the pepole who had fled and lost their dear ones & belongings. The Resort became a refuge camp providing people the much needed medical & food facilities. Desert Coursers is still helping families like these with work opportunities so they can survive. Free education is given to their children..

One of the biggest success stories of ZHEDP is of suppling bycicles to students who come from nearby villages to study in the school of Zainabad.

There are some new projects that ZHEDP is planning. One of them is to acquire a vehicle which will be used for transporting about 31 girls from the age of 13 to 16 years from 4 nearby villages to study in the High School in Zainabad. Out of the 350 students studying in the High School there are 36 girls from Zainabad, today not a single girl comes from the nearby villages. Hence we feel by providing this vehicle we would be giving 31 girls equal opportunity in life.

As Zainabad has no efficient medical facility, this vehicle will also be used as an ambulance for transporting the needy to the medical facility which is 11 kms. away and hence will save lives.

The second and the biggest project of ZHEDP will be building a High School.The existing High School is run in an old horse stable, which is a risk to students lives due to earth quake fear.

If the new building is not constructed we would have to close down and all the 350 students will be deprived of education.The new building will have library & computer rooms which they do not have today due to space constraint. If enough funds are available we could also add two more classes to the building.
